Umpires and Scorers Training Courses

Book now for January 2016

Player surveys completed by the ECB and Surrey consistently show that a key determinant of player enjoyment of the game is having competent officials.

In order to encourage our club members to take up the mantle, the Surrey Championship is prepared to reimburse clubs with the cost of attendance at a ECB ACO Level 1 Training Course held in Surrey (£50) of any member of their club who in the following season umpires in at least 3 League matches for that club. The fee includes sitting the ECB ACO Level 1 exam (which is optional and held shortly after the course), which if passed gives the official ECB ACO Umpiring Level 1 qualification.

These courses are held in the New Year and there are 4 available in Surrey, which are detailed below:

  • Frensham CC – 8 Tuesdays starting January 12 – 19.30 – 22.00. To apply contact John Gray, via jgray21@tiscali.co.uk.
  • Old Woking CC – 8 Wednesdays starting January 13 – 19.15-22.00. Apply online via http://www.wsacus.co.uk/tr_application_form.htm
  • Old Whitgiftians CC – 8 Mondays starting January 11 – 19.15-22.00. To apply contact Geoff Turner, via geoff.turnerlbw@gmail.com.
  • St. John’s School Leatherhead – 2 consecutive Saturdays starting January 30 – 09.30-17.30. To apply contact John Flatley via training@escusa.og.uk

Please share this information with as many people as possible in your clubs so we can try and do our part in increasing the number of officials available in Surrey.

Thank you.

Chairman of the Umpires Panel and member of League Executive

In addition there is a Scorers Level 1 Course which covers the basics such as scoring symbols, umpire signals and completion of the 10 parts of the scoring record or book. On top of this, you’ll get a helpful overview of the laws of the game. You don’t need any prior knowledge to participate and, when you’ve completed the course and undergone a scorer assessment (which consists of scoring a match and verbally demonstrating your understanding of the role), you’ll receive an ECB ACO Level 1 scoring certificate.

There are 2 of these planned in the county:

  • Ashtead CC – 2 consecutive Saturdays starting January 16 – 09.30-17.00. To apply contact John Flatley via training@escusa.og.uk
  • Old Woking CC – 6 Wednesdays starting March 9 – 19.30-22.00. Apply online via http://www.wsacus.co.uk/tr_application_form.htm
