| Reigate Priory win the fourth Surrey Championship Twenty20 title beating Stoke D'Abernon in the Final. A report on Finals Day is now on the News Page.
FINALS DAY REPORT
The morning of Sunday 16 August started cloudy but the sun soon broke through as the teams started to assemble at Normandy CC for the 4th Surrey Championship Twenty20 Finals Day.
The first semi-final was between Division One front-runners, Pyrford and newly promoted Stoke D’Abernon from Division Five.
Pyrford won the toss and batted first and from their 20 overs they scored 146-6 with Captain Rob Pole top-scoring with 52. Stoke D’Abernon had a good start but then lost wickets and it all became a bit tense. However, a fine innings of 84 from Tim Handel saw Stoke home with three balls to spare in front of their delighted supporters. For Pyrford, Chris Pole returned the good analysis of 4 overs, three wickets for 14 runs.
The second semi-final was an altogether different match. This saw Premier Division sides Reigate Priory and Wimbledon going head to head.
Priory batted first and in an amazing innings they scored 250-3 from their 20 overs with Jason Roy scoring 91, Chris Murtagh 52 and captain Ian Hewett 56*. A truly astounding display of good clean hitting produced a total no-one on the ground could ever recall any side getting anything like near. It was always going to be a difficult task to chase such a total and so it proved. Wimbledon tried hard but ended their 20 overs on 159-8.
After a break so everyone could recover their breath, the Final got underway. Reigate Priory won the toss and decided to bat. All on the ground wondered what total Priory would achieve this time against a Division Five side, but it proved to be so different.
Some good and steady Stoke bowling saw Priory in early trouble but they recovered to total 175-6 from their 20 overs. Ian Hewett top-scored with 44 while for Stoke Tim Handel took 3-31 from his 4 ovrs. Stoke were always under pressure from the Priory bowlers and could never keep up with the required run rate. They finished on 114-8 from their 20 overs. Surrey’s Simon King took 4-17 from 4 overs. Stoke D’Abernon certainly did themselves proud and had Priory worried at times
Championship Chairman, Denham Earl, presented Reigate Priory with the Winners Trophy and a silver salver and wished them well in the forthcoming Four County Final at Billericay. He thanked Normandy CC for their splendid arrangements on the day, together with the scorers and umpires without whom the day could not happen.
A great day’s cricket played under a clear blue sky in good spirit before a good crowd.
